In autumn 2012 a three years PhD position will open at Sassari University in Nuoro, based on external funding from the research project "Progetto legno". The selected student will be required to contribute to the project developing her/his own research.
The funding project, aiming at the evaluation, in a sustainability framework, of the
potential of local timber as construction material,
is a collaboration between engineers and foresters of Sardegna Univiersities and the regional forests service "Ente Foreste della Sardegna", with the support of the Austrian "Institute for Timber Engineering and Wood Technology" at Graz University.
While the engineers contribution has already advanced on the topics that range from the characterization of the mechanical properties of the first set of samples up to the design of buildings using X-Lam (Cross Laminated Timber), foresters contributions to the project are expected to consider questions ranging from a specifically tailored inventory of the available resource, to the evaluation of the potential resource, to the design of experimental operational plans implementing the idea, eventually focusing on methodologies, procedures and technologies that are required for any of these levels.
Attached is the first draft of the announcement of the next general seminar reporting projects advancements. Prospective PhD students with an interest in this field are invited to take part to the seminar in order to increase the chances of being selected.
